If you lead, or manage, a group of people, let them know how much you appreciate them. A small thank you note goes a long way to making someone feel good. And, the impact that they can have on morale – and by extension, productivity – can be dramatic.
Stick with your goal. One way that leaders tend to fail is that they “switch sides” when things get tough. Try to stick with the goals you’ve established, and do what you can to stay on one path until completion. You may have to eventually change paths, but do so carefully and avoid doing it too much. Constantly changes paths can make you appear confused and undetermined to others.
If you have a lack of purpose and passion, you cannot expect to get very far. You have to show people that you really stand behind everything you say. If they start to feel otherwise, you will have a hard time trying to show them that you deserve to be a leader.
Many successful leaders have used this idea to make positive changes by involving the team, or workforce. Offer an incentive, such as a gift card or other small reward, for people who are successful at implementing a positive change in the work environment. The changes can be acknowledged, and awards given at a monthly luncheon, or other get-together.
Build your team with diversity in mind. All types of people can give your organization many different ideas from which to draw on. Don’t hire a bunch of people that are pretty much like you. You will not get the innovation you need. It will also lead to failure.
Make sure your subordinates and coworkers know that you are someone who is approachable. You probably don’t want to leave holes in your schedule for conversation and socialization, but it’s necessary. Your employees expect and deserve your guidance, respect and appreciation. With it, they can become your greatest business asset. Without it, they become a tremendous business liability.
Keep in mind that hope is not always a good thing. If you or your business are involved in a situation that has an inevitable and bad ending, do what is necessary to terminate the situation and move on. Employees will never forgive blind optimism in such circumstances, and it’s better for everyone to have a bad situation behind them as soon as possible.
